Proofreading

The final stage before printing

Renée Otmar

What is proofreading?

The main task of proofreading is to correct surface errors after editing and typesetting (layout). This involves:

  • Polishing a well-edited work
  • Ensuring consistency in style, terminology, spelling and formatting, as directed by the style guide or style sheet
  • Correcting stray errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Eliminating typographical errors
  • Spotting problems in layout, placement and pre-print items.

Is it the same as line/style editing or copyediting?

No.

It’s important to note that proofreading should occur AFTER all stages of editing.
